They help us know if we are simply with them because "it's the best we can currently get" or if indeed it's a worthwhile relationship. Many people prefer lie to themselves and stay in troublesome relationships year after year. They often stay because it's easier than the alternative (i.e. hard work, divorce, break up etc).

Ultimately, it's laziness and fear that keep people in dead-end relationships. You really have to be honest with yourself and assess whether you are in a happy place right now. Are you with a person for any other reason than a real passion for them? Think about it.
