One of the most difficult things after a breakup is dealing with friends. Some will be obviously be one partner or the others friends, perhaps from before the relationship occurred, but others may be mutual friends. What do you do then? How do you split up your friends after the breakup? How can you move on if you've still got the same friends? Where do you go from here?
The first step is to not make your friends choose sides. They obviously may care for both of you, and the last thing you want to do to your friends is make them choose which one of you to be friends with. Of course sharing friends may make it difficult from time to time when special dates occur on who will attend between you and your ex, but for the most part it shouldn't cause any issues. Just remember that sometimes there will be things you can't attend as your ex will be there. It doesn't mean that your friends care for you any less, just that they were not the ones involved in the breakup and after the breakup it should still not be their issue.
Get out and make new friends. You're starting a life without your partner, why not make some other changes as well and make some new friends. Getting out and about, away from the normalcy that may remind you of your ex, may very well help you to get past the relationship. And who knows, you may find some new interests and better be able to deal with your recent breakup.
Another option is to try to remain friends with your ex. Perhaps it wasn't a really bad breakup. Maybe later on down the road the two of you can get along as friends and therefore be able to both hang out with your old mutual friends together. Remember to take time to grieve and let the wounds close before you try this though, otherwise it may lead to more pain and heartache.
Breaking up doesn't mean you have to lose all your old friends. In fact, it could be the start of many new wonderful friendships, or you may find in the end you can still remain friends with the ex. No matter which route you take, remember having a social circle and support can help you get over even the worst of breakups.
