Fetal heart monitoring, a medical procedure that detects and observes the heart beat of the fetus, is conducted either internally (use of electrode) or externally (use of a fetal heart monitor). This procedure is needed in order to know the condition of the fetus inside the mother\'s womb, most specifically to determine the baby\'s diseases and the possible challenges that may transpire during labor.

As a soon-to be mother, all you want to give your unborn child is the best care that he deserves. This prenatal care would prepare both you and your baby on the Big Day of his birth. It would also help to eliminate anomalies and problems which may occur during your delivery.
Though we know for a fact that the child is sheltered by his greatest protector, his mother, this still does not shield him from all possible harms. The unborn child, who for one is a defenseless being, is susceptible to a lot of danger that may transpire while he is still inside the mother's womb. All actions taken by the mother:
• may it be sitting down or just walking around
• might, in one way or another, affect her baby.
Even a single bite of an un-prescribed food could gravely affect the general development of the fetus. As a matter of fact, there is an increasing trend of fetal death and stillbirth not just in the US but all over the world. Stillbirth happens when the fetus dies after the 20th week of pregnancy. One way to determine if the unborn child is still alive is to detect fetal cardiac activity and the presence of heart beat. And this may be done through electronic fetal heart monitoring.
Fetal heart monitoring is used to track the condition of the baby inside the mother's womb to spot any sign of fetal diseases. There are two basic ways to do this: it may either be internal or external. Internal monitoring is done by inserting an electrode into the cervix. Thus, this method is invasive and quite effortful. Its alternative, the external monitoring, is convenient to mothers who want to have a non-invasive heart rate test. In this procedure, ultrasound transducers are attached to the mother's abdomen. These transducers use Doppler ultrasound to spot the cardiac activity of the baby. The information will then be transmitted to the baby heart monitor which will measure, calculate and record the heart rate on a continuous strip of paper. Modern versions of fetal monitors contain microprocessors and mathematical procedures that enhance the signal and the accuracy of recording.
While monitoring the heart beat of the fetus, a medical assistant will study and evaluate the monitor strip in order to:
(1) come up with an accurate and precise interpretation;
(2) determine the baseline heart rate and the presence of inconsistency;
(3) find out if there are speeding up (acceleration) or slowing down (deceleration) trends from the baseline, and;
(4) distinguish patterns of contraction in the uterus.
Lastly, the accelerations and decelerations will be correlated with uterine contractions. These steps are done in order to find out if the fetal heart rate recording is reassuring, non-reassuring, or ominous. Health providers can also develop a plan based on the findings to aid you to deliver your baby well.
It is most recommended that mothers undergo fetal heart monitoring as soon as they reach their 10th week of pregnancy. The method is completely safe and beneficial, most especially to mothers who have had experiences of difficult pregnancy before.
