When I was diagnosed with an enlarged prostate or benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) it was not that easy for the doctor to come out and say, you have an enlarged prostate. He came out and said my PSA or prostate-specific antigen was high. This means I had to go get a biopsy on my prostate to determine if I had cancer of the prostate or just an enlarged prostate.

Introduction

When I was diagnosed with an enlarged prostate or benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) it was not that easy for the doctor to come out and say, you have an enlarged prostate. He came out and said my PSA or prostate-specific antigen was high. This means I had to go get a biopsy on my prostate to determine if I had cancer of the prostate or just an enlarged prostate.

So I went to another doctor and had my biopsy performed and was told my prostate was not cancerous. That was good news, but that was the last of the doctors were involved with my prostate. I had to learn by myself I had an enlarged prostate and how to treat it.

Symptoms Of BPH

None of the doctors I have been to have offered me any medications for treating the symptoms of an enlarged prostate. I have a few of the typical symptoms as any other man who has BPH has, these are:

The above symptoms are what I have, but other symptoms you can have include:

Medications

There are several medications out there that were not discussed with me as an option to take to relieve my symptoms. None will cure my enlarged prostate but just relieve the symptoms.

They are classified into to two categories that focus on preventing DHA from being formed:

  1. Alpha-blockers

  2. 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors

I have read that by using one of these drugs, it will help 30 to 60 per cent of men taking one of these drugs. For those men who take one of these drugs and are helped, they will need to keep taking these drugs for the rest of their lives, because once stopped, symptoms will return.

My Solution

The types of drugs mentioned above are prescription drugs so a doctor needs to prescribe them for you. Since I have moved several times since my diagnosis with an enlarged prostate, I have not requested any of the medications that could relieve my symptoms.

But I have been able to find some other means to relieve my symptoms. For example, I currently take an herbal supplement that relieves my symptoms of BPH, plus they are much cheaper.
