Bunion Heartbreak

This is a short story about a guy who made a stupid decision of breaking up with his girlfriend because she had bunions. It\'s also a story about that same guy regretting his decision.

Let me tell you about Francis. He's one of my more obnoxious friends who just kept making stupid mistakes one after another. What I'm going to share with you is one of his misadventures with a girl who he gave up because she had bunions. Yup, that's right. She gave him up because she had some medical condition that brought discomfort not only to her but also to him.

It all started two years ago. My friends and my self encountered a book called "The Game". It's basically a memoir of a journalist who became a student of the greatest Pick-Up artists in the world and became one himself. When we got the book, our secret circle, mostly made up of guys, would frequent the bars trying out what we have learned from the book attempting to pick up girls. This is when Francis met Allie.

If I remember correctly, we met her and her friends one Saturday night a year ago. Among her group of friends, she was the hottest and every one in our group was interested in her. Allie was slender and tall. Her jaw line was prominent, her eyes were just amazing and her short hair didn't do anything to hide her face. Oh! And before I forget, she's probably the girl with the nicest butt in the crowd that night. In a word, she was 'amazing!'

Unfortunately, Francis was the first to call 'Dibs!' since he was the first to see her. Being the good wingmen that we were, we let him do his thing and try to seduce her. We haven't been practicing the art of Pick-up too long prior to that night but he did really well. He was able to close a date with Allie the following weekend. To be honest, most of us guys were hoping he'd burn because we wanted her for ourselves but he didn't. For a beginner, he was actually good at this game.

Anyway, when they went out, things went pretty well. It was undeniable since he was able to commit her to another date which led to another, and another, and another. Before you know it, the two were in a serious relationship.

They were happy at first. That was the case until the fifth month in their relationship. You see, Francis is an outdoors kind of guy. He likes hiking, camping, riding his mountain bike on trails and other outdoor adventure stuff. These activities would usually occupy his weekends. When he started going out with Allie, he wasn't able to do these things anymore because as much as she wanted to spend time with him, she couldn't join him because of her bunions. The only other alternative they had at that time was to spend time together doing something else - something less adventurous. Either that or she they would end up arguing about him being gone for the whole weekend and leaving her alone.

Just to illustrate how bad the condition was, whenever they went out for a walk, she would complain every once in a while that her foot hurt. They would rest for a bit, let her pain subside for a while, start walking again and after a few minutes, she would complain again. Her condition was really serious and her toe joint was really tender - I would know, I saw!

Because of this, Francis felt that she was holding him back. He couldn't enjoy the things that he loved to do and longed for the adventure, which was his passion. Therefore, as much as they liked each other, they ended up breaking it off and going their separate ways. Yes, it was a stupid reason to break-up with someone.

A few weeks after their mutual decision to stop seeing each other, Francis realized his mistake. He tried getting back with her but Allie was heartbroken and was really hurt. She wouldn't see him, talk to him, or even answer the phone. In the end, Francis gave up and stopped pestering her before she filed a restraining order on him. He gave up on getting back with her but we knew that even though he had picked up a lot of other women after the break-up, he never got to move on. Allie was his 'one-itis'.

A month ago, while we were hopping from one coffee bar to another and trying to get as many phone numbers as we can while practicing our 'day game', we bumped into her. Just as she was the first time we saw her, she was hot! Nothing much has changed except the big guy standing next to her.

You'd notice the longing in Francis' face when he said, 'Hi!' to her. We felt the pain of seeing her with someone else. Sure, we like hanging out with different women every week but that doesn't mean we don't know how to love. We know that he loves her too much, even now.

Allie returned his greeting and introduced his new boyfriend to us. Then we noticed something off with Allie. She was wearing sweat pants, a sweatshirt and a pair of running shoes. Apparently, she and her boyfriend are out jogging. When she explained it to us, we couldn't help but frown.

'How about your bunions?' I asked her without thinking twice.

'I got it removed a year ago', she explained. She underwent surgery and had that painful thing taken out. And now, she's fully recovered from the procedure and able to do more active things. Of course, she still has to be careful not to grow it back but everything's fine with her feet now.

Francis was stunned.

After the small talk, she and her boyfriend bid us farewell and resumed their jog. As they moved away, I couldn't help but look at her firm butt and think about how stupid Francis is for letting that girl go - because of a bunion!
