Introduction
Over 80% of men will develop an enlarged prostate when they are over 60 years old. Most men will experience mild complications such as frequent urination, weak urination stream and dripping after urination. But some men may require surgery because of complications, such as failure to empty bladder, bladder stones and urinary tract infection.
Going in for prostate surgery is not easy. First you need to discuss with your doctor, which one is the best for you and what are the complications from each type of surgery.
Types Of Surgery
There are various types of surgery you can elect to have.
- Transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP)
- Simple prostatectomy.
- Transurethral incision of the prostate (TUIP)
- Laser surgery
All these surgeries require some risk and end up with different results. Depending on the type of complications you are having, will depend on the type of surgery you have.
Complications From Prostate Surgery
TURP is one of the most invasive surgeries you can have, but it is also the most effective one. Complications from this type of surgery are:
- Erectile Dysfunction - Most men dread this, but basically it is impotence or the inability to have sex.
- Urinary Incontinence - This is the inability to control urination or uncontrolled urination.
- Blood In Urine - This complication is common after this surgery, but in most cases clears up before being discharged from the hospital.
- Blood Loss - As with most surgeries, excessive blood loss is a concern.
- Water Intoxication - Because of the large amount of water used during this procedure, water intoxication can occur. This condition is usually temporary and clears up quickly.
How To Prevent These Complications
One way to prevent these complications is to elect to have non-invasive surgery. Though TURP is the most promoted surgery for treating complications from an enlarged prostate, you can elect to have another surgery that does not give major complications such as those caused by TURP.
These non-invasive surgical procedures include such actions as laser surgery, use of hot water, radio frequency and microwave, to name a few.
Though the men under going these non-invasive surgical procedures do not develop the complications as seen in TURP, in most cases, the men do have to have the surgery performed again, five to ten years later.
Conclusion
Men who have to under go surgery for an enlarged prostate, need to make a decision, do they want to have a permanent correction to the problem with potential complications, or do they want a non-invasive surgery with no complications, with the possibility of having to under go the same procedure later.
