One of the most common causes of diagnosed infertility in women is Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS). PCOS is a condition in which the body produces excessive insulin resulting in the body counteracting by producing large amounts of androgens - which are male hormones. These hormones work against female fertility.

During a normal menstrual cycle, the ovaries develop multiple follicles in which eggs are contained. As the cycle moves onward, one follicle will release an egg during ovulation, while the others will usually recede. When the egg reaches the point of maturity, LH hormone levels (female hormones) surge and cause the egg to be released. This is when ovulation occurs.

Women who suffer from PCOS often are not producing enough of the female hormones to trigger ovulation. In fact, the follicles often are not able to sustain a mature egg. Some follicles can develop into cysts. When an ultrasound is completed on a woman with PCOS, these cysts often appear as a "string of pearls" within the ovary itself. These can prevent successful ovulation, and an incomplete cycle.

Some signs of PCOS include:

The absence or irregular menstruation

Increased hair growth on the back, chest, or face

Thinning hair

Obesity

High insulin levels or Type Two Diabetes

Acne

Pelvic pain

While many women are completely unaware of having PCOS, it is estimated that 5-10% of women who are considered of childbearing age do. Still, less than 25% of women who have PCOS have been diagnosed. As a woman ages, PCOS can become worse.

Some women with PCOS are able to conceive during an irregular cycle, but many are not successful due to a complete lack of ovulation. But take heart; there are things that can be done to remedy the problem. Some women have seen successful treatment by simply losing weight. Since weight has the ability to affect our hormones, losing weight often counteracts these problems.

In addition, drugs provide a remedy for many women. Clomid acts to block estrogen receptors within the brain. When these are blocked, the body believes that estrogen levels are low, causing FSH and LH hormones to kick in-these hormones trigger ovulation in the body. Still, users of Clomid only see a 30-40% chance of successful conception upon using the drug.

If simple methods do not work, further steps can be taken with In vitro Maturation (IVM) or In vitro fertilization (IVF). IVM is used to harvest immature eggs early in a woman's cycle. The eggs are then taken to a laboratory where they can mature successfully and be used for fertilization. IVF is used to harvest eggs after they have matured. The eggs are then fertilized and returned to the woman's uterus. Both of these are viable options for women with PCOS.

If you discover that you have PCOS, be mindful that there are still options for you to become pregnant. Using the methods and medications discussed above have allowed many women to successfully conceive and have the child they long for-with just a little boost. Above all, stay close with your doctor, stay positive, reduce stress in your life and keep eating healthy.
