Free of Guilt

Dos and don\'ts, rules and regulations. Are you caught in a cycle of guilt for things you have done, or failed to do? The First Law of the Kingdom is Freedom in Christ.

The Light of the World, Jesus Christ, has revealed that He has planted within each believer, by the power of His Spirit, so much potential to live as a victorious citizen of His Kingdom. Light has shone in our darkness; we are to walk in that Light. But, how does that look in your life and in mine?

We find a helpful definition of the kingdom of God, in the book of Romans 14:17. This verse became a chorus I learned to sing years ago. "Righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Ghost, that's the kingdom of God." So, there you have it in a nutshell. What is the kingdom of God? Righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Ghost. Is that the kingdom you are living in right now? For me, at times yes, at times I think I am on another planet!

Ha! It ain't a perfect world. But we serve a perfect God, hallelujah.

Today, let's study a bit about righteousness. In Romans 14, Paul was explaining to the Roman Jews that living a kingdom life had nothing to do with eating or drinking; that is, it had nothing to do with rules, rituals and performance that these Jews followed so precisely in order to be pleasing to God. Take a minute now and please read Romans 14. It is quite easy to locate a Bible online to search it.

That is a powerful teaching! The light has been turned on here. Paul teaches here that living a Kingdom life is a matter of your heart responding to the grace and love of the King. It is all about Jesus, and seeking to be immersed in God's ways of showing love for others, living peaceably and respectfully.

Most of all, it is a matter of freedom to pursue holiness and fullness of life through our relationship with Jesus, rather than through rules and performance. Jesus died and rose again to set us FREE.

Hold on now. Don't read that too fast. I know you've heard that before, but hear this: He didn't die for religion. He died for relationship! This is the heart of Christianity.

The first Law of the Kingdom is Freedom in Christ. Freedom from the past. Freedom from guilt and shame.

Friend, if your heart is conflicted about dos and don'ts, or if you have an overwhelming sense of obligation or condemnation, then Jesus wants to set you free. Yes, you are forgiven, but are you free? Have you traded one form of bondage for another?

No amount of church going, Bible study, doing good works, or writing checks will ever make God love you more than He did when you were first conceived in your mother's womb! And no attempt to "earn brownie points" will increase His love for you tomorrow.

The freedom we have in Christ is a gift; it was not earned by anything we did, and we most certainly are not required to "earn" His favor now. The blood of Jesus has washed us clean of all unrighteousness, and has permanently placed us in good standing before Holy God. Jesus alone has made us right with God. 2 Cor. 5:21 Righteousness is ours because of Christ.

God has a great unquenchable love for us as His precious children. We are freed from sin in order to be bound by love. We respond with unquenchable love for Him and honor Him by our faith, not out of obligation, but out of sincere loving gratitude. We are the company we keep. Drawing closer to Jesus rubs off on us!

Meditate on this reality! It will adjust your thinking and cause your heart to overflow with His peace and joy. Now, that's some new motivation. He has given us His best, that we might freely give our best in return.
