Vaginal dryness is one of those symptoms of menopause that is not particularly serious and it is so infrequently mentioned in the list of menopause symptoms that it almost seems like a side issue. However, a significant number of menopausal and post menopausal women suffer from it to some degree or another and for some women it is so severe it stops them from getting on with normal everyday life. Furthermore, there is a stigma attached to vaginal dryness which is not there for other menopausal symptoms. Women are often embarrassed to admit it is something they suffer from, even to others with whom they are close friends, and this perpetuates the problems and increases the embarrassment attached to it.

Vaginal dryness is caused by a decrease in the production of oestrogen which happens to all women during and after the menopause. Oestrogen is needed to encourage the cells which produce vaginal moisture to keep working and the less of it there is then the less fluids there are too. Also the vaginal walls start to lose muscle tone and suppleness and become much thinner after menopause. This, coupled with the dryness can cause itching, inflammation, rawness and irritation around the vagina and vulva which can cause great distress to many women. However, these days no woman has to suffer this highly annoying and embarrassing symptom on her own or without treatment and there are several successful ways to help with this problem.

Hormone replacement therapy is very popular and it is a highly effective treatment for most menopausal symptoms including vaginal dryness. This is because it replaces the levels of oestrogen in your system (and sometimes progesterone too) and therefore things such as night sweats, mood swings and of course vaginal dryness disappear.

However, it is important to note that hormone replacement therapy is not suitable for everyone, especially women who have had oestrogen responsive cancers, so it is vital that you discuss this option fully with your doctor and be clear about any previous medical history so you are sure it is definitely the right treatment for your menopause. If you choose HRT specifically to combat vaginal dryness, it is likely to be in the form of a pessary. This is inserted directly into the vagina and the hormones contained within it then spur the cells in the surrounding area to produce more fluids and mucus and the irritation is then relieved. However, as soon as you stop using these pessaries the problem will return so although it provides a short-term solution it is not a cure in itself.

Often, women find that treating this problem using diet, supplements and exercise brings much better longer term results. A healthy diet containing lots of fresh fruit, vegetables and fibre is essential and foods containing natural or plant estrogens are highly effective in helping vaginal dryness. Drinking plenty of plain water (at least 2 litres a day) helps keep you body hydrated and using a soothing and cooling feminine gel or cream to relieve the itch and irritation will help manage the problem in the longer term without any damaging side effects.
