I reported to the hospital for Laser Vaporization of Prostate to relieve my urinary problems. I was very anxious, but looking forward to being cured so that I could urinate freely as I did in my youth. The check -in procedures went as scheduled. I dressed in a surgical gown and waited for the anesthesiologist and the urologist. The nurse performed a series of administrative hospital protocol and made sure that I was the patient to be operated on today. Also, a needle was inserted for the medication.

On December 29, 2005 at 3:30PM, I reported to the hospital for Laser Vaporization of Prostate to relieve my urinary problems.
The urologist said "hi" and asked me how I was feeling. I indicated to him that I was very nervous. He said that I would be heavily sedated and not to worry. The anesthesiologist had a longer explanation as to the medicine that would be used to "put be under". However, he did not warn me about the after effects of the medication, which differs from patient to patient. I will comment shortly about my post surgery status.
Finally, I was rolled into the operating room and I was breathing heavily. The staffs in the operating room were very cheerful after a long days work. It was 4:00PM. If possible never schedule surgery late in the day because you have to fast all day, which leaves you very hungry after surgery. The anesthesiologist administered the medication and I was out in about forty seconds. What follows is my doctor's description of the procedure:
"The patient was brought to the operative suite and identified by his patient bracelet. Given IV sedation and general anesthetic. Placed in a relaxed dorsal lithotomic position, prepped and draped in the usual sterile fashion for endoscopic examination. Endoscopic examination confirms anatomic obstruction by all three lobes of the prostate. The KTP laser fibers placed through the laser cystoscope working channel and 80 watts of power is used to ablate prostate tissues starting with the median lobe. The median lobe was taken down in its entirety and then the left lateral lobe was addressed and then the right lateral lobe.
The laser ablation was taken down to the prostatic capsule. Care was taken to not deliver inadvertent laser energy into the bladder or distal to the verumontanum and the urethra. After completely ablating the prostate tissue with the laser, the bladder and urethra were inspected and there was no evidence of any inadvertent laser energy administered to these areas. The cystoscope was removed and a #22-French Foley catheter was placed in the bladder. The balloon was inflated at 10mL. There was clear efflux from the catheter. The patient was placed in the supine position, extubated, and taken to the recovery room in good stable condition and tolerated the procedure well."
The Laser Vaporization of the Prostate was completed a short time later; I do not remember the exact time. I awoke in the recovery room with my wife at my side. She appeared relieved that I was still alive and kicking. However, something felt strangely different. It was the bag, a Foley catheter to collect my urine. The feeling of having a tube inserted in ones penis is not a happy time for any man. The balloon inside of me was inflated at 10mL(what they use to hold the catheter in place) I would have to suffer for five to seven days. However, the doctor said that the medication would help with the pain. Wishful thinking.
I was very hungry, but I did not feel good after the surgery. A nurse warned me not to eat a heavy meal, but I had to have something to eat and quick. Ginger ale was not very satisfying at this point. So I had soup and crackers. Big mistake. I became sick to my stomach, which was made worse by having a #22- French Foley catheter sharing my body. Due to the strain of getting sick, blood began to come out of my penis. Very painful. However, I did recover, and I slept all night, because of the medication and because I had the bag to collect my urine. Warning, be very careful what, and how much you eat after surgery.
