Even two decades ago research done on humor and laughter would have been laughed out of the neurological research community. Even two decades ago research done on humor and laughter would have been laughed out of the neurological research community. However, now with new technology there has been many connections made between having a sense of humor, laughter, the levels of neurochemicals (like endorphins) and how they affect the immune system in both body and mind. The father of physconeuroimmuology (PNI) was Dr Norman Cousins, PNI was the concept of the mind affecting the immune system. He called this concept hardiness and one of the four elements of hardiness is maintaining a sense of humor and general joyfullness. Cousins thought of laughter as "internal jogging", and just like regular jogging laughter is very healthy and is even important in recovering from life threatening illnesses. In 1997 a study reported on in the APA Monitor, was done with two groups of cardiac patients, one group was asked to watch 30 minutes of comedy daily along with their regular medication and treatments. After one year, the comedy group showed:
* Enhanced respiration
* Increased number of immune cells
* Increase in immune cell proliferation
* A decrease in cortisol
* An increase in endorphins
* Lower blood pressure
* and fewer repeat heart attacks
Laughter doesn't just affect your body, it also improves your mental capabilities. Marked improvements have been shown in problem solving tests that were taken after a period of laughter. And even 10 minutes of laughter can provide you with 2 hours of good sleep. The reason is because laughter is able to turn off the posterior hypothalamic activity allowing the brain to carry on stress free. I hope you can begin to see how important laughter is to your health and well being, plus you will definitely be more fun to be around. So here a few specific actions you can take to consciously develop your sense of humor both as developer and connoisseur of humor and comedy.
* Practice being curious about stuff that normally wouldn't interest you, and learn to be amused by what you find, and share what you find with other people.
* Develop the habit of chuckling at your self when you make errors and resist blaming others or the situation.
* Keep a humor file - filled with funny pictures, videos stories, jokes anything an everything that you find funny.
* At twice a day make the biggest silliest grin you can do. Do this three times right after each other. Smiling releases endorphins into the brain.
That should give you a good place to start. Keep laughing and stay healthy!
