As a result of a significant increase in the media attention in the area on hypnotherapy, Cheshire has witnessed a remarkable growth in interest over the past couple of years. Much of this media interest has been popular, hence the boost in the number of people making enquiries with hypnotherapists in Cheshire. But at the same time there has been some persistent speculation, often amongst those without any firsthand experience, of what hypnotherapy may be able to achieve, how it may be able to achieve this, and what the consequences may be.

The Media Interest In Hypnotherapy

As a result of a significant increase in the media attention in the area on hypnotherapy, Cheshire has witnessed a remarkable growth in interest over the past couple of years. Much of this media interest has been popular, hence the boost in the number of people making enquiries with hypnotherapists in Cheshire. But at the same time there has been some persistent speculation, often amongst those without any firsthand experience, of what hypnotherapy may be able to achieve, how it may be able to achieve this, and what the consequences may be.

Sadly a number of people who would definitely benefit from the hypnotherapy Cheshire therapists can offer are being put off by the prejudices and assumptions of the minority of people with little else to do but to grind an axe. So in this article we'll look at two things which are both important - what hypnotherapy is, and what it isn't.

What Is Hypnotherapy?

Hypnotherapy is an ancient technique which allows a therapist to help patients to overcome a range of issues, from stress, anxiety and depression to fear, phobias and addictions. The therapy works by allowing the patient to become so relaxed that their conscious inhibitions and barriers are dropped, letting the therapist support them on a much deeper and more influential level. This provides a much greater level of success, with long term results. Often a full course of hypnotherapy allows patients to overcome lifelong issues, concerns, fears or phobias, with a very low rate of reversion later in life.

What Is Hypnotherapy Not?

Some people tend to think that hypnotherapy is a process in which the patient submits to the will of the therapist, with the hypnotherapist able to control their mind, reprogram it and forcibly change their behaviour like programming a computer. Some people even think that hypnotherapy or hypnosis is somehow occult or supernatural, with suggestions of mysticism, spirituality or magic introduced.

All of this is, thankfully, utter nonsense, but this doesn't stop some people believing these myths to be true, nor does it stop people with little or no understanding of hypnotherapy to spread their misguided beliefs, preventing people who would benefit tremendously from hypnotherapy from pursuing such an option.

The Truth About Hypnosis

Is hypnosis unnatural? Is being hypnotized dangerous? Are hypnotherapists or hypnotists somehow in league with supernatural forces? Certainly not! In fact hypnosis is one of the most natural things in the world, and something which we all experience every day. As you wake in the morning, perhaps to an alarm, you may hit the snooze button and start to relax a little. You may not drop off to sleep entirely, but you're not exactly awake either. You're not yet conscious enough to start worrying about meetings, work, bills or catching a flight. You'll be fully relaxed, and will probably start daydreaming a little, integrating sounds you hear outside into your own imagined world that's halfway between sleep and being awake. This is effectively the same as being hypnotised.

Hypnosis, then, is simply a natural state of being very relaxed, yet not completely asleep. You become relatively oblivious of distractions around you, and ignore your fears, worries or inhibitions. In the situation described above, you could easily wake yourself up if you suddenly realised you'd left the tap running, or heard a noise downstairs.

The same is true with hypnosis - you're not asleep, you're certainly still very much in control of yourself, your actions and the situation, and have complete control over your behaviour, actions and will. The hypnotherapist is merely someone who is able to gently nudge you towards ideas, thoughts, feelings and reactions to things which you would normally run away from. In dreams we can face reality without the fear of reality itself, and this is how hypnotherapists in Cheshire have been helping a growing number of people move on in a more positive way, without becoming dependent on drugs and medication.
