Peace of mind is a priceless commodity that cannot be bought at any price. However, it can be acquired by both rich and poor.
There is much written about the mind - body experience and with good reason. Your mental climate can have a massive effect, both positive and negative, on your overall health, both mental and physical.
To be able to focus on where you are 'now' and what you are doing 'now' is truly the key to this elusive peace of mind. Living in the present moment without the minds babble transporting you to future or past events is both liberating and calming.
To reside in a state of just 'being' and not thinking allows you to carry out any task with the full attention it deserves. The Japanese have a word for this mental state; it is 'mushin' or 'no mind'. They realise how the mind gets in the way of perfect action and how this is avoided through mushin.
You may well ask how this enviable state of being is attained; how does one achieve peace of mind?
Wordsworth used to take long walks amongst the hills and mountains of his beloved Lake District. He alludes in his poetry to the way the raw beauty of landscapes have the power to calm and sooth the spirit. To many of us, however; it is not always convenient to just take off into the countryside and commune with nature.
So, is there an alternative that is more accessible to the many residing in the city and suburbia? Well yes there is. A regular meditation practice is the most direct route to the attainment of peace of mind.
The practice of sitting in stillness for around 15 to 20 minutes once or twice a day will have an accumulative effect that will bring its rewards in a matter of weeks. Meditation for peace of mind is attained by practicing letting go of the constant stream of babble that is our thinking.
Many books and articles on the subject are readily available and there is no need for me to go into any one description here. Meditation affords the mind and body the profound rest it needs and its regular daily practice will positively transform the practitioner in a matter of a few short months.
With peace of mind, life becomes more vibrant and real, since it is not clouded and encumbered by constant fretting and mental agitation.
