A thrush infection, a.k.a yeast infection, affects more than 75% of women at some point in their lives and millions every single year. It can cause very nasty symptoms but is easily treated effectively through a variety of methods.
Candida albicans is the fungus that will cause a yeast infection. It is found in moist areas of the body such as the inside of the vagina, mouth, throat and digestive tract. The problem occurs when the balance of microorganisms in the body is disrupted allowing the yeast to grow rapidly out of control. This is how a thrush infection occurs.
There are several reasons why a thrush infection may happen such as:
Having your period
Pregnancy
Taking the birth control pill
Using antibiotics
Having an illness such as diabetes or HIV/AIDS
The yeast also flourishes in warm, moist places. This is why you should avoid wearing damp or tight clothing and maintain proper hygiene as this can also lead to a thrush infection.
Yeast infection symptoms vary depending on the severity but will usually consist of:
Redness and itching in and around the vagina
Pain while having sexual intercourse
A burning sensation while urinating
A thick, white vaginal discharge that may look like cottage cheese
Treating a yeast infection is simple and will usually clear up the infection and symptoms within a few days. There are many medicated treatments that are effective although not suitable for pregnant women. Over the counter treatments can be a good option as well as proven natural thrush remedies such as yogurt, garlic and coconut oil. Treatments should be continued for a few days even after the symptoms have cleared up.
But the best method for treating a thrush infection is prevention. Some great methods include not wearing tight synthetic clothes. These collect and trap moisture near your body which can cause an infection. Don't hang around in wet togs or underwear for too long and avoid harsh soaps and bubble baths.
