Introduction
You could have knocked me over with a feather when my health care provider walked in and told me my PSA (prostate-specific antigen) was high which meant I had either cancer of the prostate or an enlarged prostate. In order to find out which one it was he sent me to have a biopsy performed on my prostate.
Having a biopsy performed on your prostate is not a pleasant experience, but fortunately for me the results came out negative for cancer. Since I was taken completely by surprise by the diagnosis, I looked up to see what the external symptoms were for an enlarged prostate, also known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).
Symptoms Of BPH
Here are some of the external symptoms you could develop when you have an enlarged prostate. Like me, you may not experience all of these symptoms.
- Frequent Urination- You may develop frequent urination especially at night. I have not had this problem thank goodness.
- Dribbling- This is when you get through urinating and you dribble and develop that dreaded wet spot on your pants. I have this condition, at first I thought I was just lazy. Now that I know I have BPH, I am more careful at the end of urination.
- Weak Urine Steam- This is when the force of your urine stream loses pressure and it is not as forceful as it was when you were younger. After I was diagnosed with BPH, I noticed that my urine stream was weak.
- Inability To Urinate- With an enlarged prostate, the urethra tube is blocked and if it is completely blocked men will be unable to urinate and the bladder will retain the urine. Fortunately I have not developed this condition. But if you develop this type of condition, an operation may have to be performed.
- Pain With Urination Or Blood In The Urine - This is usually indicative of an infection. I developed a urinary infection after I was diagnosed with BHP. One of the complications that could develop from BHP is urinary tract infection. If you get this condition frequently and have BHP, you may need to under go an operation to correct the condition causing the infection.
- Slow Or Delayed Start To Urination - The shrinking of the urinary tube by the prostate pushing on it may cause a delay in urination. Some times I have this condition, but most times I do not.
Conclusion
These are some of the external symptoms you may develop if you have an enlarged prostate. The only sure way to know if you have BPH is to have a PSA test performed on your blood. If the results of the PSA test are high, then you will need a biopsy performed on your prostate to distinguish if it cancerous or enlarged.
