Mostly referred to by the Chinese as the "Chi", it is believed to be a vital force that animates the body, which must be circulated within the body, doing so the health and vitality of the person is enhanced. It encompasses both yoga and meditation, creating a state of relaxation and inner calm. Although it was presumed to be a form of an ancient Chinese martial art, more and more believed it to be an alternative form of stress-reducer. And since its movements resemble those of that in martial arts, practicing Tai Chi can be another way of learning some martial art techniques, which were proved to be applicable in real life situations.
Tai Chi involves certain movements of the body using slow, graceful, smooth even movements and rhythmic breathing while freeing the mind, to achieve an inner sense of tranquility and calmness. Each movement, which must be executed correctly and precisely, flows into the next without pause, to ensure that the body is in constant motion. This allows the body to recuperate, giving a revitalized and reinvigorated feeling and thus, refurbishing the body as a whole.
Tai Chi poses a diversity of health benefits, ranging from reducing anxiety and depression, improving posture, balance, flexibility and muscle strength, improving sleep patterns, lowering blood pressure, improving cardiovascular fitness and increasing energy, endurance and agility. And thus, the overall feelings of well-being are improved. It can be done alone or with a group, regardless of age or physical ability. However, it is advisable to consult a doctor before starting any new program.
Tai Chi or any other form of alternative or complementary practice to achieve optimum health, can be very effective if coupled with a proper diet, regular exercise and maintaining a healthy and a sound mind. Some useful and helpful tips include avoidance of sugar, oily and fatty foods, eating a well-balanced, high fiber diet, drinking at least 8-12 glasses a day and establishing a regular sleeping pattern. Some helpful tips to maintain the mental, emotional, spiritual and social aspects include joining productive organizations, socializing with other sound persons, attending a religious sect and of course, praying and meditation.
