When we least expect it, life can throw us some curves, and we find ourselves facing what feels like overwhelming challenge. Being resilient is key to survive the difficult times, and even come out stronger in the end. Luckily, we can grow our resiliency muscle, allowing us to handle and bounce back from adversity.

Being in the health and fitness industry over the last quarter of a century, I've worked with hundreds of individuals. It's incredibly rewarding to help people improve their health and well-being. If the work we do together makes their lives just a little bit better, healthier and happier, I am thrilled.

However, one of the unexpected pleasures I've discovered is the depth of the relationships I build with my clients. Over time, we share so much together from the exciting milestones of life to the disappointments and challenges that arise as part of the human condition.

It's always rewarding to partake in the excitement of events such as graduations, weddings and welcomed retirement. When the unexpected curve balls are thrown into the game, I hurt right along with my clients as they do for me; illness, loss, unemployment, hardship - we just never know.

What I've noticed is some of my clients recover from failure and troublesome times at a much quicker pace than others. The ability to spring back from adversity seems to be a gift some have, and others lack. It's a character trait that allows some to live with the glass half full while others see it as the glass half empty.

The German Philosopher, Friedrich Nietzche said, "That which does not kill me, make me stronger." How true! Often when individuals talk about their greatest challenges, they will state they are stronger and better people because of it.

So, what are the ways to get through the troublesome times and come out stronger? How do we keep going when we feel our strength is gone? What keeps us from crawling under the covers and never coming out? Resiliency! And the good news is, it's a skill that can be learned. We can grow the resiliency muscle just as we do our anatomical muscles.

Next time you are going through a difficult period, wondering how you will survive, try some of the tips below to become more resilient.

1. Acknowledge the emotions you are feeling, and express them. Holding back emotions is bad for your health, and may increase blood pressure. Talk about it, cry if need be, vent and then move on.

2. Keep things in proportion. Resist the temptation to think the worst will happen. A lost job does not mean you'll be living on the streets next week. A child leaving college does not mean he/she is destined to be a failure. Try to think of the "worst case scenario" and you may find it's not that terrible.

3. Commit to taking excellent care of yourself during the difficult time. Do not forgo your exercise plan. Fuel yourself with nourishing foods. Get the sleep you need. And to manage your stress, squeeze in some fun time. Although you might think you are in "crisis mode" and don't have time to take care of your personal needs, by doing so you maintain the strength to handle the challenges.

4. Create a plan. Be proactive! Don't expend all your energy thinking about all the things you can't, but wish you could, change. Focus on solutions rather than ruminating over the problem. Look at every situation as an opportunity to learn, and use your personal strengths to create a plan of action.

5. Reach out to supportive friends and family. Open up to those you feel comfortable with and know you can trust. Ask for help, and brainstorm ideas for solutions together. Support systems will help you avoid wallowing in self-pity.

6. Count your blessings. Even in the worst of times, there are things to be grateful for. Take the time to look and acknowledge them. Gratitude has been shown to increase positive emotions and happiness.

7. Remain flexible and open to possibilities. For every door that closes, a new one opens. When the road in life takes an unexpected turn, it often leads you down one you may never have even dreamt of. Remain hopeful that the future will bring new, and promising possibilities.
