There was a book a few years ago that talked about the butterfly effect (also mentioned in a movie starring Ashton Kutcher and also referenced in Jurassic Park) which basically says a small action can have unexpected but massive consequences. In this case, the idea is that a butterfly flapping its wings can lead to a massive tornado. I'm not going to walk you through the steps but, trust me, it makes sense.

Butterfly Marketing - at least the original version - was similar in concept. Basically, the idea was that you could offer something for nothing. People love getting something for nothing. That would encourage them to give you their contact information. Then you'd have a lead you could target with your other marketing - the marketing intended to sell things. At some point in the process, these people lured in by the free offer would be able to invite their friends and acquaintances.

The bottom line is a small action would cause a huge amount of viral marketing that would lead more people back to your free offer and those people would eventually, hopefully, purchase something from you.

There's a lot more to it than that, of course. And that's why the creator of the program actually was selling a course that taught the intricacies of the method for a whopping $2,000.
