Ask any successful online businessman what the most important thing regarding doing business online is, and you will quickly learn that it's 'traffic'.
Many online business owners just don't 'get' why basic search engine optimization is so important. When I consult with clients I ask them which is better, many free visitors or few paid visitors. They usually take the latter. Organic search engine optimization can benefit your website and bottom line significantly when done in an ethical manner.
For this reason I've put together a list of '5 things that you should avoid like the plague'. Using this list as a guide will help you to avoid unnecessary penalties from the major search engines:
- Keyword Stuffing- Trying to use too many keywords on a page can bring results to your website. However, it takes away from how understandable your content is, and there's nothing that turns people off to buying from you more than content that looks like an elementary school kid wrote it.
- Scraping- Scraping is using software programs to take content from other sites and place it on your own. Most web scrapers scrape search engine results, mix them up and then format them on your site. While you may see short term gain, you will definitely see long term pain when your site gets deindexed.
- Trying to Do Too Many Things- You've heard the phrase "You can't be all things to all people!" This is especially true on the web, The best way to score a good ranking in the search engines is to keep your niches tightly focused. I know what you are thinking, what about Amazon.com or eBay? Well they have the cash to advertise and the affiliate programs that help them out. Unless your pockets are this deep I would encourage you to keep your content tightly focused and relevant!
- Microtext- This is hybrid of keyword stuffing, it's the act of stuffing keywords onto your site using very tiny text that is barely visible to a reader. This will get your site deindexed very quickly! Google is now using human editors that have no other purpose than to surf websites and make sure that people aren't using this specific hack.
- Bad Coding- I should be thanking people for this one, and I hate to give away my tips but this is the biggest website killer out there. If you don't like to use HTML editors like Dreamweaver and Microsoft Expression, install a free content management system like Joomla on your website, it is free to use and works great for creating and managing your website.
Our greatest desire is to see you and your websites do well! With a little practice and some elbow grease you can have a thriving business.
