I don\'t spend as much time focusing on every new SEO trick in the book or hardcore analytics of keyword phrases. But I have learned a few things over the years about how to maximize my efforts and get the best return on investment (ROI) of my time spent writing and posting online.

Yesterday I wrote a post about "How I Got Top Google Rankings for My Keywords" in which I talked about how my freelance writing website launched itself to the top of the search engines for my keywords without me even trying.

This brought up some great dialogue about whether or not SEO is really important. It's also important to point out that keyword writing for a Web site and keyword writing for an article are two different things and they need to be handled differently.

While I didn't plan SEO for my Website, it just worked out that way for me because I have been writing for the Web for so many years now. I have learned that when you focus on quality content and delivering what the reader would want, the keywords come naturally.

You can use keyword tools to help you find keywords to write about. For example, I use Google Trends and Yahoo Buzz to see what people are talking about online and I also use Twitter trending topics. Then you can also use keyword tools like WordStream, SEO Book and more to help you narrow down the best keywords for your needs.

Then you can use these keywords to write quality content of interest to your readers. But remember, keyword stuffing is out. It's a waste and it will hurt you with your readers as well as with the search engines. You only need to use your main keyword phrase about once per 100 words of your article or Web content.

You also need to be sure your content is specific. "Tips for moms" is not specific enough for you to rank well in the search engines. There's too much competition already. "5 Tips for Eco-Friendly Moms" is more specific and this is an improved keyword phrase. "5 Tips for Eco-Friendly Work at Home Moms" is even more specific and makes an excellent headline that allows you to maximize your keywords.

Proper keyword writing is a process that involves the proper balance in writing for the reader and writing for the search engines. There is no magic formula or secret trick that you can learn, buy or steal to launch you to the top. Practice, dedication and a commitment to quality content are all needed to find success.
