Relative Importance of Search Engine Optimization and SEO Content Writing

SEO (Search Engine Optimization) and SEO Content Writing have always gone hand-in-hand. True, content writing evolved with the net and it was only when search engines came to be widely used for searching websites that SEO increased in importance. Today no website can afford to ignore the services of an in-house Search Engine Optimizer or of a dedicated SEO services provider. But is merely SEO enough to generate traffic and get loyal users or do websites also need good quality, original and exciting content?

SEO (Search Engine Optimization) and SEO Content Writing have always gone hand-in-hand. True, content writing evolved with the net and it was only when search engines came to be widely used for searching websites that SEO increased in importance. Today no website can afford to ignore the services of an in-house Search Engine Optimizer or of a dedicated SEO services provider. But is merely SEO enough to generate traffic and get loyal users or do websites also need good quality, original and exciting content?

While this question may seem a no brainer for any person or business which understands the importance of fresh and quality content, it's not so easy for the majority (or minority?) to grasp so easily. Many people just prefer to lift content and post it on their sites to fill pages and post more ads and/or add more links. But does this work? For starters this will not only reflect adversely in the site rankings as Google, through which 70% of the search traffic is routed, just does not accord the same or even half the importance that it does to the original content.

Apart from the originality aspect, don't you want your website or blog to be unique rather than just a rip-off of others who have developed content with an entirely different purpose in sight? You see, clones just don't work in the online world. I have seen many sites reproducing the same awful content with all the errors in the original content, intact. And even if you are able to get the site on the first page of Google, Yahoo and Bing using SEO how do you expect the users to explore the site or bite into the sales pitch, which is really what the whole purpose of SEO really is.

So it's a truism that SEO alone will not work; rather SEO complimented with highly focused and original content is what you need to not just get the top rankings that you so desperately crave, but also and more importantly, stay on the top page for a reasonable period of time. In fact, highly viewed and commented content manages to stay on top for years together provided there is a steady stream of comments flowing in. Thus websites need to invest in both SEO and quality content.

While we analyzed one aspect of the issue it makes to ask whether good Search Engine Optimized content is adequate to get to the first page without any dedicated SEO. Well, even this may not be always true, although it is in some cases. For instance, if the content is completely fresh with no write-ups or at most very few, then even plain SEO content will work just fine. But then it's just as true that the topic or the keywords that it contains aren't highly searched. Take the example of a article on a nondescript town called Dhansari in India, which will most likely hit bull's eye without any fancy SEO but what about a general article on India; you get my point.

Apart from this it's also a fact that blogs don't normally rank high vis-a-vis dedicated domains. So xyz.abcblog.com will more often than not come later on Google, maybe much later than xyz.com even if the former has far more relevant content than the latter. Thus content also may not be king by itself. But we can surely dress up and spread some good words about the content to make it the king, can't we?
