You should use the adwords keyword tool to help you do this. Your keyword should have a moderate amount of searches with little competition to begin with. It is a waste of time jumping right in at the deep end with the big dogs. They have worked hard over years for there website to rank that well. What you can do is optimize your website for a relevant but not as focussed keyword, but set up a PPC campaign for the keyword you would ultimately want to rank well for.

Setting up a PPC campaign is a very good idea. You can choose lots of keywords that your site can be found for then monitor the conversion rates of many different keywords. If you optimize your site for lets say "clothes" and got loads of traffic but only got 1 sale out of 100 visitors, but then you optimize your site for "mens clothes" and got 30 sales in a 100 visitors. You need to conduct PPC testing before you start out, it will save you time and effort in the long run. Don't go mad with the keywords, just select a few that you think would be able to rank well with and then see how they peform.
