Search Engine Optimization Before Generating Traffic

It has been widely noted that search engine optimization is necessary in order to generate greater traffic. However, many new webmasters fail to see the higher potential in starting this process BEFORE marketing or generating traffic to their newly created site.

Here's an example to prove my point

Let's say you've finished creating your site and have started submitting it to search engines to be indexed. As more and more good content is pushed out from your site and indexed on some of the more prominent search engines, you start to notice a small and steady stream of visitors coming from these search results.

Being reluctant before, you have finally decided to optimize your site in order to achieve higher traffic. Here lies the problem new site owners do not understand: by search engine optimizing, you will most likely have changed your URL structures. Why the change of URL structures? Reason because probably the top factor in SEO is having keywords in your URLs. By changing your URL structures, this causes you to lose most if not all of your current search engine results page (or SERPs).

Eventually, you will experience duration of almost little to zero traffic from what you originally had due to the changes you've made. However long this duration may be is dependent on each individual site. Of course by deciding to optimize your site, you will greatly achieve higher traffic in the longer run.

So why not eliminate that downtime of traffic and loss of SERPs, by immediately optimizing your new site, before attempting to market and generating traffic?

It's never too late

What if your site is no longer new and it's already been indexed? Well, it's never too late to start optimizing your site. Aside from that eventual loss of your current SERPs (as mentioned in the example above), the results generated from optimizing will far outweigh what you've lost.
