1. Not Enough Content: Most ecommerce sites lack content. They tend to be great in placing great content in product pages but often tend to neglect home page. It works if people are searching for their individual products. What if people reach home page with broader searches?

They fill up the home page with images and categories. It is a good idea to place content on home page too.

2. Bad URL's: Placing keywords in URL will boost your search engine rankings. But as most of the ecommerce sites contain 100's of pages, they often neglect to make their URL's SEO friendly.

An example of a good URL is, site.com/keyword.html but not something like this:

site.com/path=RT_CDF&12

If you are using a Drupal or Joomla CMS, you find few modules that will automatically generate user friendly URL's. Download and use them. Else, try to manually change URL's for the pages you think are important.

3. ALT Tags: It is surprising to see how many ecommerce sites neglect to do something as simple as using ALT tags for images. ALT tags not only improves accessibility but also boosts your search engine rankings. Search engines weigh ALT tags atleast as high as header tags.

Try to write ALT tags manually than generating automatically.

4. Canonicalization:
According to Matt Cutts of Google, "Canonicalization is the process of picking the best url when there are several choices, and it usually refers to home pages."

Few examples.

a. Some sites have same product in different categories. Such products have multiple urls.

b. If a product has more reviews, the "next page" button sometimes show a page with similar content but a different URL.

Using a canonical tag is a good way to solve these problems.

<link rel="canonical" rel='nofollow' href="domain.com/page"/>

Fix all the issues mentioned above, and you will see a nice jump in traffic.
