Off site SEO is a massive field, which is extremely complex and is made up of lots of different factors. The primary and most important item in my experience is links. The more links you have pointing to your site the better. The higher page rank which the websites have which those links are pointing from will naturally improve the ranking of your site over a period of time. There are lots of ways to build links, here we will look at some of the most common and discuss the features and benefits of each:

- Directory submissions - There are lots of different types of directory's which you can list your website in. Probably the most powerful is Dmoz.com, which carry's significant rank through to your website. It is recommended that you use a number of different directory's, including local business directory's, although there can be some cost with making these types of submissions. However, once they are submitted, they are a permanent link to your website from generally considered "authority" sites.

- Social bookmarks - Social bookmarks can be a way of creating further links and submissions for your site. They will if bookmarked through a number of different accounts create listings for particular keywords. However each time a website is submitted this creates a link back to your site, which generally will be a permanent fixture. Again, this should be considered as part of any link building campaign.

- Blog comments - This is a sometimes contentious area, however I firmly believe that it can help your websites position in search engines and also from a page rank perspective. Your comments need to be relevant and of value. Providing you do this, you will be potentially provided with the opportunity to build a link back to your website.

- Forum posts - Again not everyone is a believer in these types of links. I have personally experienced good results from building links in forums, but I realise that this is not for everyone. However, for most businesses this can be a good way of generating some link love for relatively low.

In addition you can also create "local business listings", through submission to Google's local business directory. This is a free service that should certainly be taken advantage of.
