There are over ten million web sites currently online and that number is growing every year. Knowing that, it's easy to see how big a challenge it is to drive visitors and potential customers to your site.
One of the easiest and most popular ways to get your pages to rank higher is to use keywords. Keywords are nothing more than the words or phrases people are most likely typing into their search engines to find what they're looking for.
Page Titles
The page title is the word or sentence that appears at the top of your browser. When you make your website you usually have the option of naming each page you create. It's a good idea to create specific pages based on different keywords that are popular among searchers.
Domain Names
What many people are now doing, especially in niche markets, is incorporating keywords, or phrases into their domain names. For example: if you specialize in selling herbal cures and medicines you might register the domain name herbalcuresandmedicine.com since that's likely what people will type into their search engines if they're looking for that product.
Meta-Tags
You will also need to use keywords in your meta-tags. Meta tags are HTML keywords, inserted directly into the HTML code, that provide information about web pages that can't be seen on the visible part of the page. Search engines use this information to help classify and rank web pages.
Headlines
Use keywords in the headline of your article on your web page. Search engines and RSS aggregators are more apt to pick up keywords in a headline than they are if they're in your body copy.
Body Copy
Back in the 'old days' of the web, using keywords was as easy as writing an article and inserting the particular word or phrase throughout the copy.
However, today it's getting tougher to rely simply on keywords placed in article copy. The reason is that, while people used to use generic terms in their searches, like 'iPod accessories', now they're searching for more specific terms like 'iPod Nano accessories under $200.'
While it's difficult, try using specific keywords and phrases throughout your copy without making it sound awkward or forced. Another technique is using the major keyword phrase in your headline and more generic keywords in your body copy.
Sitemaps
A sitemap or site index is basically a web page that lists all of the pages contained in the web site, like a book or magazine's table of contents. If you use keywords in the headlines of each or your web pages, create a sitemap that lists all of the pages to link to those pages within the search engine.
However, sitemaps do have their limitations. Most search engines allow a finite number of links from a page. So, if your web site is large, you'll have to use a different strategy.
Alt Tags
Also known as the alt tribute the alt tag is used in HTML documents to specify text that can be rendered even when the element it's applied to can't be rendered. Usually, pages with large graphic files that can't be viewed by certain browsers, or by handheld wireless devices like Blackberries, will only display the text and dispense with the graphics.
This is especially useful in SEO because some search engines can only interpret objects by analyzing their alt tags, and you're assured that your content will be viewable. Keywords can be used in alt attributes in order to bump up page and site rankings.
By optimizing your web pages with the right keyword strategies, you can boost your rankings in the search engines. And since keywords are always going to be an important part of the way people search the Internet, your best chance of improving your rankings is to learn how to use them to your advantage.
