Now positioning yourself in the top ten results for that keyword is not impossible, but in the meantime you are going to be better served by seeking out less competitive keyword phrases.

The very first thing you will want to do is keyword research. This can be time consuming but is well worth the effort. You will want to use some form of keyword tool. I recommend using the free Google keyword tool. It will do just about everything the paid tools will, but it is free. The default view while using this tools does not show you everything. Once you perform your initial search, you should change the preferences to 'Show All Columns'.

For the best possible positioning, your keyword research should be aimed at identifying keywords that are searched frequently, but do not offer much competition.

Here is an example to consider. Let's say your niche is identity theft protection. You may be inclined to build your SEO on the keywords like 'identity theft' or 'identity protection'. These short keyword phrases will get you some visibility. But they are very broad keywords and you don't want to rely only on those kinds of keywords for your SEO efforts. You should also adopt some longtail keyword phrases like 'how to protect your identity' or 'what to do about identity theft', or you may find something less obvious like 'identity credit protection'.

Now that you have a better Understanding of the importance of keyword selection let's talk about how to put them to use. Use your keywords in the titles of articles, Squidoo Lenses, blog posts, Hub Pages, and even videos. You should also sprinkle your keywords throughout the articles but don't try and overload your content with keywords. That may actually hurt your search engine rankings. You will want to create your content for the benefit of the reader, not just the search engines.

If you are creating lenses or hubs, be sure to include your keyword in the title URL when you are first setting them up. It is also a good idea to include your keyword in the first and last paragraph if possible. Then use that keyword and several other variations as tags.

The importance of Anchor Text

The goal of using proper SEO techniques is to establish a good ranking for you website. You should think about the keywords that you want to get your site ranked for. Every time you create content that is placed on web 2.0 sites, you will have an opportunity to link that content back to your site. You should use the keywords that you intend to get your site ranked for as the anchor text for your links. Do not create links that simply tell someone to click here unless you are trying to get ranked for the keyword 'here'. You will need to get creative with this as it can be difficult at times to write with anchor text that makes sense. If you are creating articles, you will have the opportunity to use a resource box at the end of the article as a place for your anchor text links.

Tying it all together

Another strong strategy to consider is creating your own web of content. While your ultimate goal is to create links from quality sites back to your site, it is also beneficial to build an intertwined web of all of your content. It is a good idea to occasionally use your link opportunities to promote your content on other sites. Create some links to your articles on the article sites, your videos on the video sites, and your Squidoo Lenses and Hub Pages.

Some sites like EzineArticles.com allow you to have two links in your resource box. You can use one link with anchor text for your blog and another link to a video that is related to the content of your article. The more links that all of your content gets, the more authority it will have in the eyes of the search engine spiders.

A few words on PPC

Pay per click advertising can be an excellent source of immediate traffic. It is exactly as it sounds, you pay for every click that you receive from your advertising with the search engines. PPC advertising can get out of hand quickly costing you a lot of money. The best use of PPC advertising involves the same keyword research that you perform with SEO. Be aware that Pay Per Click advertising will not build any long term traffic to your site.

The proper use of SEO techniques will slowly build your credibility and help you create your own search engine domination. The time you will spend working with these tips will pay you dividends for years to come. There is absolutely no better form of traffic than the free traffic you will get from a high search ranking.
