Another Money Love Analogy

Love is like money, another analogy to add to the ocean. Brief and slightly elitist, apologies.

While speeding in my car the other day to work, I thought up an analogy to help explain the idea of selfish love to people who don't care or aren't able to understand the concept from its name. This comes after a debate between me an an acquaintance of mine who wouldn't put the idea together that:
A.) Had loved perfectly unselfishly, self proclaimed and
B.) Always got hurts while doing so.
My efforts to show her that this is an argument for selfish love and not against, failed. I believe her too, she has more than her fair share of naive.
An analogy that I feel better relates to people not accustomed to philosophizing about their actions, i.e. enjoy themselves; or think they do, is comparing love to money.
Not only does this analogy bring them closer to rethinking money and introduce them to other aspects of objectivism, but it also uses something tangible, every one has used and they can understand.
Love is like money.
Love has to be earned. You do not expect to just be handed money for doing nothing, you don't expect to get that position at a job by telling the boss how pathetic you are, or that you "really need it" or that they should give it to you just because you are you. Earning money or applying for a job/position requires that you sell that person your strengths. Your resume is a list of your accomplishments and ability. You don't apply for a job saying that it will make you feel better about yourself and that they should give it out of pity. Your resume doesn't list your failures and your weaknesses, exemplifying how worthless you are, in hopes that the boss will understand that if he doesn't employ you you will starve. Love is the same. You want to be loved for your strengths, not your weaknesses, your ability, not your worthlessness. You want to be loved for what you are, what you stand for and what you have accomplished, not for "you." (This has always puzzled me, how can one love you for "you" without loving all the aforementioned?). Love out of pity is a gross distortion of the term.
Love is personal. You don't go around, handing out money just to people that ask for it, hopefully. Just as you don't waste money, give it to the unearned or destroy it, you shouldn't do the same to love. If you give out love to everybody and expect everyone else to do the same later, repay in you when you feel the need to be loved, watch as the doors close and the backs turn because "now is not a good time." You could never hope to recoup all of the lost money you gave to random strangers, and could not expect enough random people to pay you. A better way to insure yourself money for the coming year is to keep your money. Spend it selfishly, on only the things that will bring you happiness or invest it in people you find worthwhile and grow your financial security. Why pay the man who sells your groceries and a vagabond the same? Why love them the same? People love their children and their spouses more than most strangers and that is selfish love. because if my wife loved a hobo as much as me I would divorce her because she does not love me.
It is okay to love more than one person, don't get me wrong, but you can't love everybody equal because it is treason against those you love genuinely.
