Online dating has become extremely popular - and with good reason. Rather than spending hours upon hours going to singles events, bars and other social activities, you just log on to your computer and browse the profiles of hundreds of singles in your area. You can start a conversation and get to know the other person without changing out of your pajamas.

Online dating has become extremely popular - and with good reason. You can start a conversation and get to know the other person without changing out of your pajamas.
The most challenging part of online dating sites, however, is creating an interesting profile. Often, this can be the most difficult part of online dating. Sure, you want to say things that are most likely to appeal to others, but you also want to reflect who you are and what you're looking for. Unless you're a skilled writer, this can be an extremely challenging task.
The biggest mistake most people make is writing their profile when they're in the wrong frame of mind. Most of us find it difficult to say positive things about ourselves even on our best day, but trying to do so when you're depressed, feeling hopeless or anxious is an impossible task. Unfortunately, that's when we're most likely to turn to online dating - after a breakup, divorce or when we're just plain tired of being alone.
It's a lot easier to start creating your profile offline. Staring at the blank screen of the online dating site is intimidating and it's easy to just type a couple of quick sentences and hit the "submit" button. The best time is when you're in a good mood and looking your best. Pick a few positive traits that describe your personality. For example, are you fun-loving or are solitary evenings at home more your style? Are you artsy and creative or a serious business professional? Do you like to surround yourself with family and friends or are you happier spending quiet evenings alone with someone special? Remember, your goal is to get someone compatible to contact you to start a conversation. You want to weed out those with personalities that will clash with yours, so don't feel compelled to try to appeal to everyone.
Next, write a few sentences that describe what you're looking for in a partner. This isn't the time to worry about stepping on a few toes - be specific about what you're looking for. The people who might be offended are not going to be a good fit for you anyway! If you haven't taken the time to write down what you want in a mate, you should do this first. Before you find the perfect person for you, it's important that you have a clear understanding of just who that is. Describing personality traits is more important than physical characteristics when seeking a long-term relationship. If you're shy, for example, are you looking for someone more outgoing who will help you come out of your shell or would you be happier with someone who is equally quiet and reserved? Are you looking for someone who will interact well with your children, your pets or your friends? Then describe the attributes that will make that possible. If there's an activity you're passionate about, be sure to indicate that you're looking for someone who shares that passion.
Your profile doesn't have to be long, but it shouldn't be too short, either. A single short paragraph isn't going to generate interest or provide something to talk about, but attempting to write a book isn't necessary. Most people will read no more than three to four paragraphs.
Above all, write with personality! If you're playful and fun, make sure your profile sounds fun. If your friends often describe you as someone "with attitude," don't be afraid to let that attitude show. Be yourself and you'll be far more likely to attract someone who will accept you for who you are.
