Let's face it, these websites have a stigma to them. It's a general belief that men (and women) who use these sites are socially awkward, unable to cope with the realities of dating, and so are retreating behind a monitor to hide from social activity.

This is not true. But the stigma is there, so we're going to have to deal with it anyway.

First, please realize that these websites are more like communities. You can friend people on them. There are groups you can join and interact with. There are open forums on some of them. Basically they are like... any other online social gathering place. And all online social gathering places are like real life gathering places.

If you started going to a certain bar in your neighborhood, would you go in, hit on everybody, get blown out, and then leave? Well, if you wanted to go back to this bar over and over I would advise against it. You would be much better off by getting to know everyone, starting to build your own social circle, and then as women come in, they will see you as the center of attention, a fun and charismatic addition to the culture of the place, and that would get them interested into seeing more of you.

This is exactly what my friend Troy (otherwise known as the Spartan) does. When he throws house parties, he's quick to take a position such as doorman, so that he is able to meet everyone as they come in, as well as be part of the core of the party group.

So how does this relate? Make yourself known on the forum. Get friends who will comment on your stuff, build a history. This will help project your character over the web page, and allow the women who look at it to understand who you are much faster than they would otherwise.

Is it possible to succeed on these sites without building this history? Well, sure, but success here is extremely random. You can painstakingly worry about every word you write in your bio. How do you know what "works" and what doesn't? Or you can show how cool you really are by the friends you have. This is how real life works, and this is how online works.

There are many women who get on a dating site briefly, perhaps for a week or two after a breakup. There are others who are shy and nervous about meeting someone online. These women are looking for the humanity behind the bio. What a better way to show it than by having people vouching for you?
