Can you make a totally free website? Well the answer to that is "Yes", there are, however, some basic costs that you may be better off paying.
You will need a computer and an internet connection, these you have probably got already. You will also need a "domain name" and some "web space". You can find places where you can get both of these for free but there are downsides.
Free web space will has quite a few disadvantages - you will have to make a call if you are happy to live with these - the sort of problems you can encounter with free web space are listed below:-
- You will have limited web page space.
- You may have advertising banners and/or pop ads on your homepage and/or all of your pages. This will make your website look unprofessional and visitors may doubt your credibility.
- The web address tends to be long and hard-to-remember (instead of yourdomain.com)
- There will be no guarantees of site availability and longevity
- There will be no branded emails addresses (you@yourdomain.com)
- Any technical support will be poor (if any)
- May not be free forever
- Search engines often ignore it
- Can't add interactive features (chat rooms, message boards, games, online ordering etc.)
If you are going to invest time in building your website putting it on free web space maybe an unnecessary saving.
I know of companies where you can get a whole year hosting and a domain name for as little as $50.00, this is not a huge amount to pay to give you company a professional look for a year.
As well as web space and a domain name you will need a web authoring package to actually generate your web site. The WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) web authoring packages are the best - this means that you do not have to do the code - you just format it as it would look on the internet and the package generates the code for you - magic!
There are places you can get free software to do this although a good paid option is Dreamweaver.
It has never been easier to build your own website but do you need to understand all the technical stuff? Well you do not need to be an expert but it is easier if you have a little understanding how it hangs together. So what are the stages of building a web site?
First you will need to source the following:-
- Web space
- Domain Name
- Web authoring Software (including FTP)
Before you begin work I suggest that you plan out your website - it will save you a huge amount of time; have an idea of what you want to put on your website and roughly how you want it to look. For your first attempt try and keep it simple.
Remember that first impressions count and people will judge your business by what is put on your website. If it looks unprofessional with spelling mistakes etc people will assume your business is unprofessional.
