In today's world, what makes a website stand out among the masses? Nearly everyone can use a free template and design a fully-functional, relatively attractive site, but among the thousands of sites that exist out there, only a hundred in each category receive most of the traffic the web has to offer. There is an increasing awareness that in the world of Web 2.0, where users are more involved web participation than ever before, there is a greater need for websites to be interactive.

In the development world, this means adding any number of elements to sites that users can write on, play with, or participate in. Some of these include polls, guest books, weather information, video content, etc. The point is that websites are increasingly designed to be tailor-fit to anyone using them. They are usually chock-full of these sort of gadgets, but one aspect of customization that often goes overlooked is web graphic design. Development is extremely important as well, but the visual aspect of the site can be as crucial, if not more so.

Seeing a website for the first time is like seeing a person for the first time; first impressions are everything. So before you even consider customization, you must make sure your site has a good basic design to begin with. Pay attention to simple details like placement of important information, line spacing of text, how much padding you have between text and other elements, etc. Your site should have a clear navigation system, follow understood rules of web design, and be accessible for a broad audience.

Once basic design is taken care of, the next step is to work with customization based on interactive user input. One of the most common schemes is to have different graphic or color schemes based on user input. Make sure to include at least three different schemes that users can choose from, have each one represent a totally different range of the color spectrum, and include a few different complementary colors within each scheme. If you are extra ambitious, you can not only adjust the color but the graphic display as well, and play around with fun alternate designs, like a tropical rainforest, a moonscape, underwater creatures, etc. Your themes and color are obviously dependent on your own taste and the content of your website, but be creative and your visitors will be delighted by the choices available to them.

It is important to note that this requires some complicated CSS scripting that may be beyond what most basic designers are capable of. However, before you spend the time and energy installing a bunch of interactive elements and designs on the site, you should consider for a moment who your target audience is. If you are designing a site that will be mostly used by an older, less computer-literate generation, you may be wasting your time. Web users who function at a basic level are probably not interested in interactive web designs and wouldn't know how to use them anyway. So only spend the time creating the option on your site if you make it clear how to change between themes and you are certain visitors to your site understand how it works.
