This is generally the same things that happens when you bake a cake. What do you think they will say when you unveil your first attempt to make your own website? If you never learn how to make an edible cake, I feel sorry for your friends. If you never learn how to effectively learn how to make your own website, I feel sorry for you.

While it is true, each of these pieces will allow you make your own website, the one that comes out won't be worth much to you or to your visitors. You see, there is more to it than that. And in fact, if you would follow the pattern, you would waste more time and energy than by doing it right. For this to work, you will need to go to your favorite search engine and perform an exact search. In Google this can be done by placing quotation marks around your search query, I will refer to this as your keyword from now on. As an example, let's use "fish food".

When we preformed our search, we find that there are exactly 500,000 websites that specialize in fish food. Before you panic at this number and give up on the idea of making your own website, there is another piece of information you need. This will put things into perspective.

To find the search volume you'll need to use the data collected from the same search engine you found the number of competing websites on. Going by our previous use of Google you can use their free AdWords Keyword Tool. Make sure no matter what engine you use, sort the results by the "Exact" match type. If you don't, your calculations will be off and you will be back to where you started.

Now let's say that there are 1 million people looking for our keyword each month, this is the search volume. Taking the number of websites, we divide them by the search volume. Websites/search volume. In our example here we see that there are two searchers for every website.

If you were to find such a niche, you would be very lucky. And your chances for success if you were to make your own websites in this niche would be greatly improved.

Now lets assume that only 10,000 people look for fish food each month. That would mean that there are 50 websites for each searcher. That changes things quite a bit doesn't it? If you tried to make your own website with these figures you would face much steeper competition.

By investing a little time in this step, you're ensuring that the next steps will go much smoother. Furthermore, by making your own website with this information in hand, you are doing so with reasonable expectations.

Just like in a recipe, each step you take when you make your own website flows into the next one. The data that we have just collected gives us an excellent starting point for us to select our domain name. It is important to make sure that your domain name and the content on our website match. We will want do this by using our primary keyword in the domain name. Building off of our example, let's say that you're going to make your own website about fish food.

Since most two word domain names are taken, you will most likely need to be more creative. This can be anything, assuming it doesn't get too long and it prominently contains your keyword. An example would be FishFoodFrenzy.com

As I have already stated, when your website shows relevance you have an improved chance of ranking for your chosen topic. Another strategy involves understanding how people search. Use yourself as a representation of the average searcher. Which websites are you more likely to click on in the SERPs (search engine result pages), those with a fitting web address or... One that has a completely unrelated URL? For most people the answer is the one that shows the most relevance.

As you can see, the more effort you're willing to invest in these preliminary steps, the more you improve your chances for success.
