\'Keep it Simple\' is a good expression when describing any menu used on a website. After all the site content should be the main focus. A well designed website is like a catalogue of information. Successful navigation from one topic to the next is critical.

The menu on a website is but one of many navigation links used to enhance or frustrate the visitor experience. The importance of this cannot be under estimated. In this article I will focus on navigation links referred to as the website menu or navigation bar.

Choosing a style either horizontal or vertical and where it should be located is an important aspect of site organization. Where to start? Simply visit other websites and notice what you like and dislike about the location and style of the menus. Typically, there will be one main navigation bar located at the top - horizontal menu - or located at the left - vertical menu. More complex websites may have multiple menus located at both the top and bottom and left and right.

A menu is located on the website master page and is seen on every page on your site. If you are a beginner start with one menu e.g. a horizontal menu on the top. You can easily add another menu later to the bottom of the master page.

If you are more adventurous and with a lot of content start with the top horizontal and left vertical navigation bar. When the menus have been set-up begin placing your text and images on all pages. This must be done strategically so additional menus can be added in the future without a problem. Not doing this may cause problems when you have to change the location of text and images on various pages to accommodate a new menu.

Tips:

- If a beginner start with either a horizontal menu at the top or a vertical menu on the left

- Consider using a menu template provided at easy to build websites locations

- If you think you will add additional menus in the future build your page content accordingly

- Keep your choice of menu buttons simple they should be a reference for visitors and not distract from your content
