One Thing You Must Do When Redesigning Your Next Website

Do you know the one thing that 99% of businesses won't even consider when developing a new website? This "thing" can mean the difference between ranking high in the search engines and not ranking at all.
Before I get into it, I want to let you in on my background and how I know these things. I have worked for a technology company for almost four years now, and got the job right out of college. My job has consisted of a lot of cold calling to companies that had bad websites
. Not only that, but I have been implementing successful SEO
campaigns for the last three years for companies like Laughlin Designs and Trump Steaks.
I would look all day long at website directories and browse through every category possible calling on those companies that had bad websites. If you have ever been involved in this kind of work, you know how bad some days can be. The thing is though; I see so many bad mistakes on the websites I see that I feel compelled to let them know how my company could fix those problems.
One of the most prevalent things I notice when browsing through the directories is when I find a 404 error. Usually the directory is linking to an old web page before the company had redesigned its website. Typically, this is an internal page...not the home page. Some of you reading this right now might know where I am going with this.
There is a way to keep those old links pointing to your new website, instead of disappearing and causing a broken link on the website that linked to you. It is done by using a 301 redirect. This method essentially redirects anyone that goes to the old pages that do not exist to the new pages. Not only that but it helps to hide the links from competitors that are trying to spy on your website's incoming links.
Any incoming links are valuable to a website's search engine rankings. By not paying attention to this concept, you are doomed to be listed deep in the search results. As we all know, being listed past the first two pages of search results will result in almost zero search engine traffic. You might find the occasional person that browses deep into a search only because they are looking for something that isn't found on the first pages, but that doesn't happen very often. Usually they will try again with a different search phrase.
The next time you are looking to upgrade your website with a new look, be sure to use a 301 redirect for each page you are replacing. This will help you from taking a step backwards in your marketing efforts.
