Sheffield Companies Face Tough Competition Online

Through local innovation and government funding, Sheffield is seeing a large shift in emerging markets. Website developers and service providers are now enjoying increased sales throughout the region, but also face increasing competition.

With a history of having a strong manufacturing base of industries, Sheffield has always been known for steel, mining areas and being under-developed in terms of the financial and technology markets. This notion is now changing, with a huge injection of cash from the government, local council and the Private sector; Sheffield has enjoyed a great first decade in the 21st century.

To kick-start the local service sector business activity, the first thing to change was the on-line competitiveness of the local companies. One main reason for the quick increase in the technology industry was the financial impetuous given by organizations such as Yorkshire Forward, Business Link and other grant systems. This meant technology in sustainable industries grew quickly, helping unemployment levels.

Another area that grew quicker than expected is the Internet and Web Services market. Again boosted by the financial help, these kinds of firms were easier to access than others, and meant this was a speedier way to tackle the areas poor skills base. Through free skills training and a series of business set-up programs, Sheffield now boasts one of the most developed technology and Internet workforces in the UK.

The competition is always lower to start, then comes the saturation of the market. As prices of websites come down, and the competition rises, something has to give. The inevitable result is that a few companies will struggle to continue, but this is a normal 'market forces' dilemma, and at least shows that the area around Sheffield is at a point where it is past self sufficiency.

One E-Commerce company Director from Sheffield, Neil Palmer, says he sees no reason why Sheffield should not be viewed as the most exciting region in the UK for data and information technology: "The sheer competitiveness of Sheffield business owners is the best thing we have to offer. Don not forget around 20 years ago the Sheffield industries were pretty much on their knees. Now we have bounced back and offer computer technology services that rate amongst the best you can find".
