There are all sorts of ways to get your website in order, and the best part is that you do not need to spend big piles of money getting it done. I know - you don't believe me. But, here's the thing about today's Internet. There is always someone out there creating what you're looking for and with the tools they have, it can be done quicker and cheaper than ever before - sometimes even for free. So, without further ado, here are some of the places I go hunting for fancy new website digs.
WordPress Themes
WordPress is downright amazing. It is one of the most functional and versatile content management tools on the net and it's all free. You can find hundreds of different themes on the cheap, or even for free, and some of them look pretty darn good. So, where do you go to find all those nice, shiny new themes? Here's a list:
• WordPress.org - The official site has a ton of free themes listed that people upload regularly. Keep in mind that most of these three themes have no support, so if you have technical problems, you're on your own.
• ThemeForest.com - I am an especially avid fan of this website. The themes all cost a bit of money, but the rates are significantly lower than what you'll find on some premium theme shops and they're very well done.
• Rocket Theme - These are a bit more expensive, but they are some of the more versatile and better looking themes you'll find on the net.
Something Simpler
If you're not in the mood to put a content management system or a blog together, don't worry - I've got you covered. There are dozens of potential ways to get a website off the ground without spending the better part of your existence putting it together. Here are some good minisite and graphic resources:
• MiniSiteGallery.com - This site is loaded with free templates that people provide for minisite users. If you need something simple and basic, head here for the freebies.
• SXC.hu - Free graphics and stock images, along with links to paid stock images if you need them. There are plenty of options here for anyone that needs them.
• Outsourcing - If you want something original, but affordable, head to sites like Elance.com or GetaFreelancer.com. You can get minisites designed for less than $75 and fresh graphics for $20-$100 depending on what you need.
In short, if you're building a new website, you should consider how the different tools you're using impact the site. It needs to be fresh, but it also needs to be simple, especially if you're on a budget and need to wait before you can afford a pricy programmer or designer.
If all else fails, find a way to use something free or inexpensive for a simple, plain as day website that gets the job done. People don't expect Flash presentations of backflipping monkeys on the screen anymore - just easy to read, simple information.
